I am an artist. I became a floral designer. A life-long student of the arts, with studies in Fine Art, Architecture and Clothing Design, I 'fell' into a career of Floral Design. A career which continues to allow me to do what I love; create and share all that I have learned.
I have worked in the retail floral design industry for 30 years and during that time, owned my own shop in Calgary, AB Canada for 7 years. In addition to the daily work in flower shops I have also done stage presentations and facilitated workshops in floral design in Canada and the United States. I was a co-presenter and designer of 2 main-stage programs at the American Institute of Floral Designers National Symposia; "Journey" in Palm Desert CA, USA (2005) with Hitomi Gilliam AIFD and Donald Yim AIFD and "Catalyst for Creativity" in Anaheim CA, (2016) with Susanne Law AIFD and Brenna Quan AIFD.
I have designed and facilitated workshops for lay-people, college programs, (Olds College, Olds AB, and Mount Royal University, Calgary AB - Canada) garden centres, Garden Clubs and private businesses as well as people seeking or developing professional floral design careers.
My own professional development is important to me and I attend several workshops and shows yearly as a knowledge and experience seeker, myself. The AIFD National Symposium and 'Survival of the Creative Mind Conference' (Taos, NM, USA) are highlights of my year. I compete in National and International Floral Design Competitions - look for me at the Pacific Northwest Cup, Vancouver BC, Canada and the Maple Leaf Cup, Edmonton AB, Canada in March of 2018 - qualifiers for the Gateway to the Americas Cup and World Cup of Floral Design, respectively.
In my work as a professional stylist during my career as a florist, I worked closely with photographers for interior and lifestyle magazines, Canadian House & Home, Style at Home, Western Living and Avenue.
Recently I have re-discovered joy in painting and have exhibited in group shows, (Art Exposed 2015, & 2017 and 'Muses and Mysteries" 2018) in my home city, Kamloops BC, Canada. In this way, I came full-circle in a way. Plans to become and Architect and Interior Design were satisfied in my styling work for top interior designers, fashion: the world of floral design has embraced the human form as a floral design “canvas”, and Fine Art - well, I will always be an artist.
